I just had the motherboard on my Dell Inspirion 17 7720 desktop replacement laptop die and decided better off getting a new computer. The 7720 had a 17.3 inch 1600x900 screen. Some of 15 in. laptops I am seeing online seem like the better deal than the 17 in. 1920x1080 seems to be the current standard for both 15 and 17.
My question is how much of a difference or adjustment would it be to go to a smaller laptop with higher res?

Depends of computer hardware. Bigger size wants bigger cpu/gpu you know... So for gaming laptop i prefer for you to take this 1600x900.
If you want a gaming machine you should take bigger resolution with better parts.
