Can I have a truly full and immersive gaming experience on a laptop under or around $2000?

Today's mobile GPUs are extremely potent.
This is especially true in the high end. (Which a $2000 budget qualifies you for)

An nvidia 680m is a desktop GTX 670 downclocked with slower RAM.

An AMD 7970m is a slightly downclocked desktop 7870.

With that kind of power, it is absolutely not a surprise that laptops equipped with 1 or 2 of those can deliver solid gaming experiences.

I'd like to point out that a desktop will always result in better performance for your money as you pay for the convenience and mobility of a laptop. However, the sacrifices once made for that union are MUCH lower than they used to be.
