Good gaming laptops

I've been looking for a good gaming laptop under £1000 and it won't slow down when playing games like Call of Duty on it.

is the msi gt70 under £1000. the base models with a gtx 675m are about $1.4k in the US.

I answer this same question in the same way every day. You will probably not get your wish. Laptops are NOT portable desktops. They are MUCH less powerful for the dollar and always will be. IMHO, laptop should only be used for those applications and occasions were portability is mandatory. Personally, I don't know how anyone could enjoy playing a shooter on a laptop anyway.

When looking at uk esc sites I am sorry the answer is maybe the lenovo y580 but it doesn't even have a full hd screen.

Can you use ebay and have the seller ship you a machine? then you could find the gt70 for a decent price...

Chances are you'll be fine gaming on that MSI laptop, however don't expect to be able to turn the settings all the way up and expect it to not slow down. That's the largest caveat with laptop gaming....it's like ram1009 said, it's just not up to snuff.

That being said, I game on my laptop just fine. I am okay with lower settings getting me acceptable framerates. I don't need AA turned all the way up on a laptop anyway, because what's the use? The panel, though it might be bright and true to color, is no where near as sharp as my wife's 23" IPS monitor.

I have to agree with the MSI choice. I actually just bought one and I was a little scared, but getting it I love it. It has a lot of cool features. I purchased this guy.

The quality seems solid. The higher resolution is nice, however the panel is probably average in terms of quality (aside from resolution). I checked the temperatures regularly (as thermals was a big concern of mine in a laptop) and it stays cool with an option that lets you turn up the fan (around 55C on the video card). Personally I love it for a laptop (you have to consider your not getting the gaming prowess of a desktop). Runs the witcher 2 on relatively low settings (that games engine is hard on video cards) and Skyrim on high smooth as butter. You can find other stuff, but feature wise your not going to match these MSIs right now. Build quality seems solid, but it is big. It gets my recommendation. Else if your looking for cheaper, you can find some AMD systems with a video card in there. They seem cheap for the power they put out. Acer makes a couple of ones near the 700-800 range that are good.

Sadly its probably to expensive doing some research after I posted the UK prices are the american prices on laptops with a different symbol instead of the dollar sign it hurts to see that.

Its getting a bit tiresome to see people dismiss laptops for gaming. Truth is, some laptops can run games quite well, especially games that are not on the cutting edge.

But yes, you will get less power for your money, compared to a big bulky desktop that takes over your living room.

4 problems with gaming laptops
1. they are 3-5x the price of the desktop.
2. the good ones are 17+ inches and weigh 8-10lbs without the power chord
3. They still cost more then 1k.
4. the GPUs are 2-3 generations old(compared to desktops). A gtx660m is worse then my gtx 460.

5.If you are not playing cutting edge games even the intel 4000 can play a lot of steam games.

As I said, yes, you're getting more bang for the buck if you buy a desktop. But that doesn't mean you can't play some games on a laptop too.

A laptop with a 6770 equivalent can play Skyrim at 1920x1080 with detail at max. Witcher 1 too. And older titles like Battlefield 2 that are kept fresh by mods.

So, for some games and gamers, a laptop can be an ok solution. It's not as black and white as people often make it on these boards.

As far as I can tell since you live in the UK and MSI/Alienware overcharge on gaming laptops. This is about as good as it gets.

I like division_9's suggestion with the gtx675m and a 500GB 7200RPM 32MB cache hd.

No office software and no AV software if you can choose not to have the bloat ware go for it.
