Avast is free and has a "game mode" which makes it use very few resources and stay in the background. It is not a good as it used to be, but still better than most AV-programs out there.

You need to register with an e-mail adress, but the program is free.

Go for 360 total security. I was blown away by it.
I have tried Avira, Avast, AVG, Panda, CIS, Zonealarm, Ad aware etc. Nothing comes close to this in terms of lightness. Has one of the best detection rates in industry too.

Then don't read this users review:

"Qihoo is one of the most dishonest companies that exist" August 20, 2014 | By Michaellee95 | Version: 360 Total Security 4.0.0.2065
Pros
millions of users had their personal documents stolen by the company and published on the Internet.

Cons
Qihoo is one of the most dishonest companies that exist
Qihoo caused a great panic in China, millions of users had their personal documents stolen by the company and published on the Internet.

Summary
Qihoo is one of the companies already committed more absurd practices and a collection of data theft scandals, eg "PSafe" a base of Qihoo in Brazil
has several fake Facebook profiles to promote themselves, stealing identities of people who have absolutely no relationship with the Company, at the same time trying to denigrate the image of competitors.
Qihoo also had the most banned from app store after creating a fake Windows update and infect much of the users applications in China.
application stores excluded: all software of Qihoo after she create a fake Windows update to install your software.

Hmm, must admit that I had heard some rumors regarding this. But since it is a Microsoft certified av and is highly rated in reputed websites like av-test.org, I assumed those boys had done their homework before certifying it.

I have used Avast Free and Premium for years. They used to have a great product, didn't eat up resources and never had an issue connecting to the internet and the gui was simple. Then they come out with the updated version. Man whoever decided to add all the unecessary crap ruined it for me. I admin probably 40-50 computers and have since taken all seats of Avast off because it has become so bloated and memory intesive its as bad as Norton. The Gui is very complicated and very overwelming. SO sad that this has happened to such a good product.

Now I just use the protection that comes with windows and call it a day at least they do not bog the system down and they do catch stuff once in a while.
