I've searched but most threads are old....

Looking for recs for a good video editing laptop, refurbished is fine and expected. I know to look for quad core and 16+GB RAM, but mostly I just need a few ideas of models to search for and what a good price is these days.

1. What is your budget? $500 but not firm

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? any

3. What screen resolution do you want? any

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? portable

5. How much battery life do you need? any

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? not necessary

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) video editing

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? any would be fine

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? hopefully a couple of years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? any

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

13. What country do you live in? USA

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

This is sort of for a gift and I'm not super computer literate. Can you point me to a few decent models, a reasonable price and some places to go searching?

For $515 you can buy the following 15.6" HP convertible laptop which has a 1920x1080 resolution touchscreen, dual core i5-7200u, 8GB RAM, and 1TB HDD. It is the least expensive laptop on Amazon I can find with an i5-7200u. The fact that is also a convertible and has a touchscreen a bonus since those two usually adds to the cost of a laptop.

A quad core Intel CPU would be better for video editing, but that costs more money. There are laptops with quad core AMD APUs, but they are not very powerful. A dual core i5 CPU provides better performance.

Thanks! I wasn't very impressed by amazon results, myself. What about something like this on ebay? It's right around $400.

Oh, I forgot about the part where you stated a refurb was okay.

It should be fine for the job since it has a quad core 2nd gen Core i7 CPU. 1080p video should not be much of a problem, but if you intend on editing 4k video, then I am pretty sure you would be disappointed.

You can opt for something like my laptop though. ASUS X456UQ Notebook PC. It's $600 or 32,000 pesos here in the Philippines which has a Intel Core i5-6200U 2 Cores/ 4HT Cores, 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT940MX, 4GB DDR4 RAM, Windows 10 Home SL OS, 1TB HDD, 1366x768 Resolution. I rendered a Full 1080P in just 12 minutes. If you are luckier, you can get the GDDR5 GT940MX Option which is a lot better.
