Im trying to find a gaming laptop with both 1070 and a thunderbolt 3 port. i dont want it for the eGPU thing i want to have a dock and monitor setup at home that i can just plug the thunderbolt 3 cable into the dock and power cable, and my dock already has the monitor, mouse, and keyboard already to go so its essentially a desktop, that i can take to school with me. any advice on the dock as well. i was just going to copy linus's dock solution. thank you for your assistance in advance.

The GTX10XX series, nVidia is pretty much placing the desktop versions of the graphics chips right into the laptops. The chips are binned better, so their power consumption will be lower, and their clocks can be reduced to further drop the power requirements, but by and large, the desktop and laptop Pascals are the same thing. In a relatively bizarre twist, the mobile GTX1070 has MORE CUDA cores and TMUs than the desktop GTX1070 version, but it is clocked lower. For this experiment, this also means that the two GTX1070s are detected as entirely different devices, so they are not likely to SLI easily. There are a couple of projects that try to get SLI to play nice with different video cards, but that requires modifying drivers.

My budget is around 1500-1700. From what I'm seeing I'm going to have to buy one used. EBay has quite a few options. Now I'm trying to debate which brand/model would be most suitable. I'm starting to love the alienware r4. I think it's a thunderbolt 3 port on it as well

i went with the alienware r4 17 in laptop. absolutely love it. i had to take it apart however to repaste it as the factory thermal paste is terrible and i was getting 90C+ on the cpu while gaming. and that got it down to 70c max on synthetic load and the 1070 never gets over 66C. weird note, the 1070 overclocks better on my laptop than on my AIO watercooled 1070. its flashy when i want it to be but it is also used in a business setting with the leds off. i wish i went for the 15 inch one however. the 17 inch doesnt fit standard 17 in laptop backpacks. had to buy one for a 18.4 inch and its still tight. but with that said its the only thing i would do different. its a monster and dells warranty service is awesome. will be extending it when the time comes.
