As the title says, this is for gaming and I want my laptop to be as future proof as possible.
I estimate the difference in price to be roughly £50 cheaper if i go for 970m

Solution
The 970M should have roughly the same performance as a desktop 960, the 980M as a desktop 970. Should be plenty of benchmarks out there to compare performance. It's pretty tough to get a laptop that's future proof, but one with a more powerful GPU (980M) is obviously going to last you longer.

The extra VRAM of the 970M is unlikely to make a difference. For either graphics card, you're probably going to be limited by GPU performance before you run out of VRAM.
