Actually, these have been around for quite a while. You can do the same thing with a raspberry pi and a transmitting antennae (Arduinos or any other PLC's will work as well). I have a college friend who had done just that.

As they said, there are only 4096 combinations, which a processor can chew through almost instantly.

True, others have gained similar results with slightly similar hardware, it's just that Kamkar's got his great way of demonstrating vulnerabilities in a way that can grab attention.
