Governor Sarah Palin and indeed the republican party was left a little red in the face earlier this week when someone hacked her email account. Today we figure Palin is turning a violent shade of purple as details emerge about how easy it was for hackers
This is partly Yahoo's (and other mail providers) fault. It used to be, that you could enter a security question yourself, like "How many hairs do I have on my balls?". Then they fixed it and locked you into a bunch of stupid questions, the majority of which could easily be answered by most of your colleagues at work. Which kinda defeats the whole purpose of a *security* question.
Granted, people with an internet prowess higher than that of a drunken monkey don't answer these questions anymore, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose of a security question too.

Nobody is checking that your answer to a zip code question is "0 hairs".
I call this vigilante justice. The woman is already under investigation for corruption charges and wrongful termination of government employees. Now we find out through this that she was conducting government business through Yahoo email, most likely to avoid freedom of information acts. Why is she running for VP again? Is the Republican Party TRYING to destroy any shred of credibility it has left?

Considering how divided down the middle this country is between "conservative Republican" and "liberal Democrat" ideals, any comment probably would lead to a series of flames and thumbs down.
Pretending she isn't McCain's VP but a just a person, this shows how... um... ignorant many people are about taking good security measures. jhansonxi was dead on - you can greatly increase your security by picking nonsensical answers (or mapping the "standard" questions to a list of crazy made up questions so they make sense to yourself).
However, considering her status, my concern is that the government will deem Anonymous' recent actions (between the hack and Scientology threats) as a "terrorist organization" and thus use their extreme powers to crack down on US dissidents.
The whole secret question thing is BS anyways. People just need to remember their passwords. I like to use math equations rendered in latex as password because remembering equations is easy and the added latex notation makes it tough as hell to crack
and if you can remember the PW then do something simple and wright it down in a text document that is unnamed.
Yes, lets give the nuclear codes to someone who does government business using an online e-mail account. I used to think that all this talk about doomsday in 2012 was a joke but if this fool gets into the White House all bets are off. God save us from your followers
Nice to know how many defenders of privacy there are in this forum and on this website. Question: given Jane's flippant writing does Tom's value your privacy? I see the need to remind all you idiots including the author that Palin was a victim of a crime and none of you have any evidence whatsoever to prove your allegations. Email titles don't betray contents. The emails could have been overtly political. In which case it would have been a crime to send them over gov't email. You simply don't know. Jane (the author)certainly showed she cares more about such allegations than privacy or the law, after all the victim is a Republican so therefore it's ok. No need to focus on the crime just the spoils of that crime. Then she proceeds to exaggerate the spoils of that crime. Stalin would be proud Jane.
Honestly this is quite funny. I find that since it was so easy to guess the password like this (guessing passwords is hardly hacking in my book) I find that possibly other hackers or amateur crackers to anon will start to try this trick on other account.
Though I feel very sorry for the poor guy who did hack the account. If it were me I would have not changed the password and just collected as many Emails as possible and leak them all at once to the press and other forums. Not only that but also secure other ways to get back into the account should the pass be changed. This would have proven much more funny cause lets face it. This is just embarrassing for Yahoo and Palin. Not to mention a huge motive booster for other hackers out there. I do believe we will see more leaks similar to this but not revealed as such. x3
pereira5375 ya it was illegal and ya it is a shame when it happens to average joes but you have to understand that we the american people have been lied to and decieved by the republican party for the past 8 years...they have been pulling illegal crap for years and dont get caught or charged or anything and when ever legitimet partys try to invesigate them they are stone walled and can do anything. So some individual took maters in to his own hands and succeded where all other legal actions failed it might not have gotten when they wanted but they exposed a little bit of what they have been hiding and dont want the average people to see and by average people I mean people who make less than 100k a year....it seems once u make more then that you automaticly become a republican
Why isn't this in the newspapers or new sites? I would've expected this to be bigger news especially since this would give some ammo for the Obama camp. Just another thing, I think Palin has a history of electing friends into office.
McCain has stated that he doe not know how to operate a computer or use email. =( I do not want to vote for someone that is not current with the times and still hanging on to old values. I think America needs a huge culture change to stay up in the modern world.
Of course, liberals talk so much about personal privacy, and how "evil" Bush is, but when one of their own violates a a citizens rights, why, it's funny. So long as it's a Republican citizen, correct you liberal hypocrites? Cuz we don't have the same rights, correct?
Funny, that's the same story Mao and Lenin, Stalin,Trotsky had, and they slaughtered 10-12 times as many people as the Socialist Hitler did. It always starts with hate, hypocrisy, and lies. Who better at that than Pelosi , Kennedy and Obama? If Obama had been hacked, you two-faced racists would have been screaming about "bitter whites" again keeping the black man down. Instead, you laugh about it. That's why your Muslim leader Obama is in such a close race with a 70 year old nincompoop. At least McCain loves his country, like your precious JFK did: Remember "Ask not what your country can do for you.."? You would all call JFK a Republican, by your loony standards now.
A crime is a crime. If you can't accept that, then leave America, it's that simple. Iran would be glad to have you.
