Has Samsung improved tablet updates?

I have a 5 year old Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8013) that only had one firmware update. Then it was abandoned by Samsung. Are they any better today on a new product, which I'm considering?

Almost all devices have limitations placed by the manufacturer. While only one update seems a tad over done, I have seen it happen before. There is no way to know ahead of time how many updates to the OS the manufacturer will allow for.
