Hello everybody, I am just wondering if there is a HD DVR recording device that could records or captures at least 3 - 4 channels with AC3 output or HDMI audio output to the external harddrive, which then later could be connected to the PC and played. Since dish and directTV always encrypt their video content and not sure how you guys record it, if you guys could help, that will be a blessing and I greatly appreciate that.

The encryption ensures that the user has a contract and licensed device to receive the signal. The premium channels use "copy once", meaning the recording can't be moved to another drive. Shared video is still permitted in most cases.
AC3 is usually the default.
An external device has the advantage, I assume, that even if the drive with an operating system fails the recordings can still be played. That is not the case with internal drive recordings as far as I have found. The numerous detection problems reported with external devices are probably inflated. I don't use one so I can't say. There could still be a link to the recording device but I'm not sure. If the external device is failing, only copy freely recordings can be moved elsewhere.
