i built a computer and its connected to my smart tv through an hdmi cable. all drivers have been installed but the hdmi audio isn't recognized in the settings. can anyone help?

Did you install the video drivers which usually install the HDMI drivers? If the video is onboard

Look in device manager there must be something with a ? beside it

Also check to see if you've selected HDMI as you output. Open the Control Panel > Sound find the HDMI output and set it to default.

i had someone install the drivers and the disk that comes with the video card doesn't read when i put it in. When i go to the control panel, it says the device isn't plugged in under the HDMI

Well we don't have any system specs here, so I don't know anything about your graphics card or your system. However it is more than likely that you have more than one HDMI output (though maybe not), did you check all the HDMI outputs in the Sound Control Panel?

Go into the Device Manager and expand the Sound, video and game controllers.

Is there an entry for NVIDIA High Definition Audio and NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device?

yes and its selected. it doesn't specifically say NVIDIA, but it has been selected. that was the default.

Sorry not in the Sound Control Panel like I had you look before, in the Device Manager. It should look something like this:
