Samsung 4k tv UN65JS9000 seems to randomly lose picture. Connected through a Denon reciever AVR-S720W. Continues to pay sound, but to correct, I have to switch inputs off the reciever (there's nothing else hardwired) and back in which works to restore picture every third or fourth time. I assume it's some kind of hdmi issue...but the cords are all new...

You should try a different input on the TV. Try a different brand of cable (especially for the receiver to TV connection).
HDMI can be very tricky. A combination of source - cable - receiver - cable - TV may not work because one or more of these don't meet the HDMI specifications. Sometimes the input on the TV can make a difference too.
You are getting sound from the receiver so the cables connecting your sources to it are probably OK.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't between the sources because it happens with more than one source...but I checked the cord between the reciever and the TV, and it seems fine. I replaced it just recently...I don't think I can change the input though because it's the only one that allows ARC pass through, which we use for the cable box...

Hello.

Does HDMI directly to the TV never lose picture? It is not rare to see the HDMI switch on the rear of receivers fail. (I've seen literally hundreds) I suggest trying the receiver with another TV to see if it's not a communication error, or really the Denon itself.

Thanks for the suggestion...it's definitely worth a try. Such a pain to disconnect everything though...it's all wired in a cabinet.

If you want to save yourself some problems, you can always ditch the HDMI switching and simply connect all to the TV directly, then use an optical wire from the TV to the amp?

If your TV doesn't have enough HDMI inputs, get an HDMI switcher.

Sadly, I considered that too, but I've got a dolby atmos setup and so far as I know, optical doesn't support that. It's part of why I got the new reciever, as it's all 4K, with atmos.

Ouch....I hate how the new Atmos needs absolutely HDMI. It makes for a lot of issues for when the HDMI switch fails. But yeah, can't you just put a small tv right next to the samsung, connect your HDMI cable to it, and check if it still loses picture?

Good point...I was thinking is have to move the reciever, not the TV...lol...I'll give that a try. Thanks!

I also have this issue. I am connecting a 1080ti gfx with a hdmi to a newly bought HW-K960 which then connects to a samsung UE65KS7500. At first it is fine but then after a few minutes it starts blinking. Soon after the blinking gets faster and in the end it disconnects completely. I can connect fine with the hdmi to the tv, but going through the receiver makes something go wrong. Any advice?

Its the Netflix app on Windows 10. Full of DRM and handshake HDCP problems. Nvidia Shield works but haven't support for ATMOS in the Netflix app.

From HOWtoGeek:

"Short of buying a new television or giving up on your video game project the only way to deal with your HDCP compliance problem is to buy a cheap HDMI splitter that ignores HDCP requests.

We really wish we were kidding, but that’s the secret media center ingredient that has helped thousands of consumers and the very same secret ingredient that we use here at How-To Geek when we need to take screenshots of an on-screen menu to showcase a product we’re reviewing.

Specifically, we use the ViewHD 2-Port 1×2 Powered HDMI Splitter (Model: VHD-1X2MN3D) ($20) because even among cheap HDMI splitters, there is no consistency to whether they will be HDMI compliant (even, sometimes, among products from the very same company). A little careful reading and using the Amazon reviews search function goes a long way toward ferreting out cheap splitters that other consumers have had success with.
To use the splitter, simply put it between the output and display device. For example, say you have a simple setup where you just want to plug a Chromecast into an old monitor. Instead, you’d plug the Chromecast into the input on your HDMI splitter, and then use an HDMI cable to connect the output on the splitter to your display. If you have a new audio-video receiver that doesn’t play nice with your old HDTV, plug all your HDMI devices into the receiver and then place the HDMI splitter between the receiver and the display."

Have similar issue with Xfinity X1 box into Denon AVR1912 into Samsung UN55JS9000. When turning all devices on, the video randomly freezes when you first change channels. Audio comes thru OK but video freezes on previous channel. Removed the Denon completely and ran X1 box direct to Samsung TV and problem went away (using all the same HDMI cables). Put the Denon back into the chain and problem came back. None of this happened with previous Comcast HD box. Will the "splitter" idea mentioned in another response possibly solve this problem?

Iam also experiencing the same problem through my cable box and receiver getting dropped picture, rest TV and it's ok for a min or 2. But when I watch my android box also connected to receiver a ok. Switch hdmi on the back of receiver still same thing. Hook up cable box to tv and it's fine. Will this hdmi splitter work? How could this be fine on the android box but not cable tv box.

Having the same issue with a Marantz SR5012. I bought it recently enough that I can return it, I'll see if the replacement has the same issue.

If problem is windows->Reciever->Samsung TV then its quite easy to fix. Download Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) 1.4.1 and Monitor Assist from Entech. Connect pc directly to Samsung and extract HDMI EDID info with monitor assist (write down timing info you find..or take a photo..). Open Cru (run as admin). Most likely your problem is under Extension block CEA-862.. you thee find 1 or 2 resolution listed in Detailed Resolution.. since its a denon I think you find a 30P interlaced 4k resolution listed there.. change it to 3840x2160.. click copy in top of window to copy edid to registry. Do the same in main window (Monitor Assist). Reboot.. Problem solved. Btw, once you ot everythin working export in cru to inf.. and google how to install unsigned drivers.. install that inf as display driver and problem solved for good. Btw, I have a new pioneer with same issue. I think most recievers have this, reason is because there is not much space for Edid info and they priority old interlaced listenings over PC / PC-HDR.. xbox x 4k HDR and so on.

Btw in my post above I meant to first connect tv to pc to get edid info and then connect pc to reciever and use cru to create an hdmi edid override for the reciever. It’s quite easy.
