HDMI to RCA cable adapter for Blu-Ray to Audio receiver question

I want to play CD's using my Yamaha receiver, so I bought a Samsung Blu-ray player because someone told me that it would work to play audio CD's (since they don't sell cd players anymore). when I opened the blu-ray player it only had a HDMI port and the Yamaha receiver does not. so I was looking at what cable would help me to connect the 2 devices and found a HDMI to RCA cable and wondered if I bought this cable, would it do the job to play CD's on my receiver? and if so, would the audio quality suffer. Any tips or pointers on what to do would be grateful. Like should i just return the blu-ray player?

Your first choice would be a Toslink optical cable, most BR player should have this port, and if your yamaha is dolby capable it should also have this port.

Otherwise go for the HDMI to RCA, the quality would depend on the DAC used, I never owned one so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

You can't use a cable that has an HDMI connector at one end and RCA at the other. HDMI is digital video and audio and has to be converted to analog for your stereo.
To use your BD player with an analog stereo you need an HDMI audio extractor like this one
