HDMI to VGA not working, any advice?

Hey all,

Recently I found an old monitor of mine from an old desktop. The monitor itself is an emachine LCD model with a VGA connection. I wanted to use it as a second screen for my laptop, an Alienware 17 with an HDMI in/out port.
I bought a Moread adapter that has a VGA female and an HDMI male connection, but when I plug everything in, nothing happens. My laptop/Windows 10 doesn't recognize the external monitor. However, it does recognize my TV with a straight HDMI cable and it does so without incident, and runs both screens at once.

Any advice on the issue?

Extra info:
The monitor is around 10 years old, but still works. The VGA cable has a little rust buildup on one end. Not a lot, but enough to notice. Using the display menu or FN+F1 doesn't recognize it either.



UPDATE: I may have bought the wrong adapter. I tried hooking it up to various things and found some interesting results:
PS4 to TV vie cable: Spotty picture
Laptop to TV: Doesn't work
TV to Laptop: Doesn't work

So... If anyone has any advice still, I'm game. I might just return the cable and buy a bi-way instead.

Does the monitor work when connected to anything else? Also, does your graphics card/GPU allow for having more than one monitor connected? Sadly not all do. You need to go into the "Nvidia Control Panel" and see if it has a section for multiple displays. Check the settings in there to make sure you aren't set for a single display only, and if it will allow for more.

I'm running a GTX 880m. Resources I found online say it CAN run multiple monitors. Like I said in the above post, it can do my TV and Laptop at the same time. The settings are set to "multiple displays", and the monitor works just fine on other places.

The only reasons I can think of are either the adapter you got isn't working correctly, or the monitor is not connecting to the Nvidia. That is if there is another graphics card/GPU in the laptop.

Well, as I can see it, it might be the adapter.
I mean, my laptop can connect to other screens flawlessly, other screens can connect to it flawlessly. So I really don't get it. The only other GPU I have in an onboard Intel driver set, but it still recognizes second screens otherwise.

vga is analog only - hdmi -dvi''D'' and display port is digital only then you now need a ''ACTIVE'' converter not the passive type one's in order to convert the all digital signal to analog

dvi''I'' carries both analog and digital and a passive dvi-I to vga [dsub] adaptor will work [the extra 4 pins in a dvi-I plug you see around the flat bar pin is for the analog part of things ]

now I don't do multi monitors but you do see a lot of issue trying to set them up these days ???

After reading some of those forums, I think the problem is the converter itself.
It seems like this idea was doomed from the start! (HA!) Anyway, thanks for the help!

Hello!! I have the solution! After messing around a little, I found out that the resolution for the display I am using is not working.

My setup is as follows:
- Laptop display (uses the internal graphics card, some intel stuff)
- Second screen (10 years old I believe) that only has VGA, uses NVidia 1050 GTX (my good one)

In the display properties of windows I found that my second screen uses the GTX, if you then go into the NVidia control panel and set the resulotion to 800x600, it suddenly works! Jaj!

Plus I have the same display adapter you have, that's why I believe I have the solution here.
