HDMI TV model compatibility

Went to local Pots electrical for generic HDMI(TV) to USB(laptop) to utilise TV for audio/visual. Was told I needed TV and laptop make, model & age as there are compatibility variations specific to different TV's and PC'c. Is this the case? and what, if any, additional info do I need? This one will encode the audio over the HDMI too. Important since all HDMI inputs (except those labeled for DVI use) don't have separate audio inputs.
Make sure that there are drivers for the one you buy for your laptop.
