HDTV best $ can buy?

hello all,

quick question for all you helpful people: What specs/features/ size should i look for in HDTV for gaming on my PC/+ DVD's/ + Xbox and Dreamcast gaming? Looking for an upgrade i can use since i need a new TV... also any stores/ retail or online to look into?

(ex: lcd/hdtv/1080i/dvi output/32"/$1500 or something... but more info possibly, hehe)

Anyways, just looking for something i can hook up to my receiver/PC/Xbox/Dreamcast... gaming and other stuff.. hope to hear from you soon. til' then take care. thanks in advance! =)

IDK much about gaming wise, always use a monitor for all of that. VGA adapters can be bought for all major systems, and a good monitor will ALWAYS be better then a good HDTV for gaming (someone's going to have a problem with me saying that, but 99% of the guys at this forum would agree)


I've been in the market to buy an HDTV for my bedroom, and have found very little in a low price point. Toshiba makes a 1080i HDTV, rear projection. It isin their custom serries. MSRB is 1300, but after last thanksgiving it was available for 900. the BIG appeal to this tv is that its 51 inches. If you dont care much about gaming QUALITY, and would much perfer a monster screan, this would be your best bet.

However, progressive will be better for games, and 1080i is interlased (hence the "i")

all CRT and rear projection tv's are interlaced, so that rules those out. those two are also the least expencive, so you will have a smaller screan for the money buying progressive.

LCD, PDP, and other digital technologies are usualy in 720p. almost all flat panal TV's are progressive

I dont know much past that, but responce time, image quality, refresh meathod (interlased or progressive), resolution, and overal screan size are some very important points that should be concidered.

i got the Dell 20" LCD monitor, but i want somethin' for my consoles/TV/DVD watchin (DVD's, and dark shadows and dark shades don't work well with this LCD due to minor backlighting [im a perfectionist]) so i want something that can produce both excellent bright and dark color displays for my needs/taste.

What's the rule/specs for size in terms of how big my room is/ how far away my seating is? [that 51"may be too big (?)]

In the days of SDTV (standard def), it mattered how far away you were from your tv. But now, as long as your more then a few feet, its perfectly fine. I'm getting it for my (very very very small) bedroom, and I will be about nine feet away from it. I looked at it in the store from nine feet away, and it looked perfectly acceptable.

yes 720p would be best for your wallet, 1080p sets are all above 2500 bucks most console games (to my knowledge) dont support 1080p anyways. But 1080p would be far better if you were to hook up a computer.

Older DLP models made playing games impossible, due to the lag time between input and output. Newer models have greatly improved that, however, I would still be a little weary.

A Plasma display has excelent contrast, but can experience burn in. The burn in can be removed by leaving it on a static channel for an hour, but that seems like it would be very annoying.



I'm not sure, because I havent done TOO much research on plasma, but it might be best for your needs. Plasma can acchieve pure black, because it can turn a pixel completely off. DLP can not, because as each mirror moves, it will reflect a tiny ammount of light onto other places of the display. I am not sure if that problem has been fixed in newer generations.

I would recommend going over to AVS forums, or annother more TV-oriented forum. I'll help you as much as I can, but they can probably help you better.
