Headphones not working right

I have Sony headphones (MDR-XB400IP) with the mic and buttons when I plug it into a device that uses the standard configurations it doesn't work very well but if i pull the jack out a bit it works great

What I mean by not very well the audio sounds like anything panned center is missing

I think this is because of the TRRS Connector on the headphones

Is there some adapter I need?

EDIT: I Notice if I press the middle button on the remote it works but this is not a toggle button

I unselected Best Answer for you but I dont think there will be a solution to your problem; mainly because your headset has the inline buttons otherwise you could use an adapter like this:
