help password latitude 620

Have not used my two old dell d620,s and was going to erase and give to some less fortune kids. In playing around trying to put them as owners can not open the computer. Have tried my old log in info and no luck can not get in.
Has windows XP and going to format and install Vista, is formatting going to wipe it totally clean or should I do something else
