Help! What products are available?

I would like to have TiVo Basic to help me better enjoy television. I don't
need for it to provide a DVD. I'm looking for the best buy. I've tried a
lot of different searches and also looked at manufacturer's websites
(Toshiba, Pioneer, etc). I really can't find anything but something with a
DVD included.

I do not think you will find any of the Tivo units that have the
basic tivo service that do not have a DVD player/recorder.
Cost of a 40 hour Tivo runs around $99 brand new with rebate.
The monthly service is around 12.95 and you can always just purchase
a 3 month card to give it a try. If you do purchase a SA Tivo than I
would suggest going with the lifetime subscription. It is allot of capital
outlay
to begin with but is worth it over the time that the unit should last.
The full blown service gives you allot of options in what you can
do with your tivo over the basic service. It is something to look at.
If you watch the Tivo website you can usually find a good deal on
a refurbished unit.

He's talking about basic TiVo service - not basic TiVos.

All boxes with basic TiVo service have built-in DVD players (but not
the other way around - thanks Humax

So, have you personally used a TiVo? Your 'proof' is useless otherwise.
(Of course, your 'proof' is useless even if you have used a TiVo... your
personal preference doesn't prove something is 'the best'.)

[I knew that this SatelliteGuys thing was a bad idea... I just don't
suppose we can do anything about it, eh?]

I think you're being careless here. basic TiVos most certainly do NOT
have a built-in DVD player, much less a DVD recorder.

Huh? Tivo units that include basic (free) Tivo service most certainly
*do* include either a built-in DVD player, or recorder.

Anyway, to address the OP, I bought my SD-H400 with the intent of only
using the basic service (in my case I was actually shopping for a DVD
player) and only subscribed to the "plus" service to qualify for the
rebate. Cost was only $150 (after rebate), but once I got to experience
Season Pass, TTG, etc I am keeping the plus service. You probalby will
too.

Then you havent looked hard enough, there are indeed DVD Recorders that
include what is called 'Basic Tivo'

Thank you for correcting me. A TiVo owner, I had not heard of "TiVo
Basic". As you point out, it is a service included with (in) some
models of Pioneer DVD recorders and Toshiba DVD players.
If I understand what you (and other websites) have said, the Humax is a
DVD recorder with full-fledged TiVo capabilities. I think that will be
my next machine....

It sounds like you're still missing the point that TiVo Basic is just what
ships included with the Pioneer & Tohsiba units. You can still 'upgrade'
those units to the normal TiVo service for a monthly fee.

TiVo Basic seems to have been invented for those more expensive units, to
make it so they'll never be 'doorstops' (which a normal S2 TiVo turns into
without a subscription).

Take a look at this page: http/www.tivo.com/2.1.9.asp

You will notice that the two recorders there that say "TiVo Basic
service included" both have DVDs. Then look at
http/customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv1199.htm
where it points out that TiVo Basic does not require registration
(and does not have a monthly fee), but is limited.

By simply paying the standard monthly fee, a TiVo Basic unit will
have full functionality.
