help with stereo and surround sound

Hi all.
First if all, Sorry if I call things by their wrong terms, I'm new to the audio side if tech.
Anyway. I bought these Sony MDR XB600 STEREO headphones as opposed to a gaming headset, as I'd heard headphones are way better. What I was hoping for was a truely emerging exp. The exprience when playing games such as dayz. So when someone sneaks from behind, I really hear them coming. The fact that they are sterio would mean this wouldn't happen, surely?
I theb looked into getting an Asus xonar, for £20. Would getting this make my game audio surround. If someone could explain to me simply what studio and surround are, and what a sound card would do, I would appreciate it alot

Well you only have 2 ears,m so you only need stereo headphones to get a complete surround sound. But it does require the sound to be shaped correctly. Eg the Asus Xonar range uses Dolby Headphone
