help with upgrading for VR(new to upgrades)

as of right now i have a stock asus rog gb20cb with the GTX 970 and i7 6700 @ 3.4ghz.

im planning on upgrading the graphics card since i dont mind the graphics on fallout 4vr being blurry but im getting pretty consistent frame rate hic-ups. i was wondering if i upgrade to the asus 1060 on amazon

will my pc be able to do the upgrade or will i also need to upgrade something else? ive never actually upgraded my own pc ive usually just bought new pcs but i finally have one worth upgrading.

any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

The GTX 1060 uses less power than the 970 and is likely physically smaller (though always worth double checking), so it would be a slot-in upgrade. But it's not that big of an upgrade over a 970, not really enough to be worth it. You ought to be looking at a 1070 for an upgrade that will actually be noticeable in games.

Agreed. I have the 970 FTW from EVGA. I've been looking into a VR gaming area for months and learned a while back that the 1060's performance boost just isn't worth the money invested. I recommend the 1070 for your situation. I'm opting for a 1080. A 1070 Ti can tickle the toes of the 1080 when OC'd.

i just cant afford a 1070 at the moment so was planning on trying the 1060 to see if that improves. but i guess from the sounds of it i should wait until i can buy the 1070. Ill keep an eye out for sales thanks guys.

same question kinda tho lol... if i bought the 1070 and the physical dimensions are the same would the 1070 be a simple upgrade or would i need a different motherboard.

Get a 1080. I have the 1080 ti and it barely covers Fallout VR with SS@1.5. With VR, you want as much 'horsepower' as you can afford. That is if you just want to enjoy VR without messing with a bunch of ini/settings to get things running smoothly.

It would be simple. The PSU requirements are pretty much the same. That assumes you have a 500W or better quality PSU. I've been a 70s guy. I purchased the 570 with my 2500K and the 970 with my 4690K. A little better with the 1060 is one thing but this is VR. 90FPS vs 60FPS. THat's 90FPS consistant. The 1060 is fine for VR, please don't get that wrong. For someone just entering the world of PCs and VR an 8400 i5 with a 1060 would be good. For someone who already knows the 970 like you and I do the 1060 would be a tease imo.. This time I'm not settling and am finally opting for the 1080. The return will be so much sweeter. The 1080 also gives you 8GB VRAM(vs 6GB) which is helpful for the aforementioned supersampling.
