I always recommend the 2013 Nexus 7. Affordable, reliable, great form factor (about the shape of a paperback book), and more than adequate for simply reading newspapers and such. A little pricer than some of the sub-$100 tablets, but it's Google branded, is of a higher quality, and still gets the latest software updates.
