Hmm, got gprs indicator on one phone and not on the other.

Ok, I bought a new Sony T62u off Ebay and had it activated with a SIM
I had already been using with another T62u. It had never been
activated and was a snap to get it sending and receiving calls. I
took the SIM out of my wife's Nokia 6340i and put it into my used T62u
and got it activated after a few minutes. The one strange thing that
I have noticed is that after getting my used T62u activated it is now
showing the GPRS signal indicator above the regular signal indicator
and I had not see that GPRS indicator when that phone was previously
activated and that same indicator is not showing on my new T62u
either. I don't know if that used phone of mine was activated a
little differently or whether some buttons I pressed while sliding the
battery cover back on it caused that indicator to appear. Right after
getting that phone activated I slid the battery cover back on and was
holding some keys and when I turnd the phone back over I saw something
on the screen about power on Y/N ? message on the display. I had
never seen that before. I did a master reset later on and that GPRS
signal indicator is still visible. If that is normal I wonder why it
didn't come on over the past few weeks and why it isn't coming on in
my new T62u. Navas, this ought to be right up your alley 😉

It was probably activated differently.

I know in the Dallas market we were activating as TDMA phones until a couple
of months ago and then they began activating as GSM. But I think this was a
system thing more than a phone operation thing.

On GSM phones GPRS can be turned on, always on or connect as needed.
This is probably the difference. This may work like a quicklaunch program
that resides in your task bar. It may pole the internet (GPRS General Packet
Radio Service) and maintain a connection ready for internet activity.
Some folks think this makes you vernerable for viruses or being snooped on,
I think they should take their medication.

Can you access the internet on both phones?
Have both phones been set up for internet access.....

I think Zarch is correct. Most likely, this has to do with the "always
on" or "when needed" setting. Some phones don't have this setting so
its automatically set to "when needed". Let me explain the differences
between these two settings. Many people thing that when you have your
phone's GPRS set to "always on" that the phone is always on the
Internet. This is *NOT* the case. Basically, this setting only affects
the GPRS components of the phone. As far as most users are concerned the
only advantages of running "always on" is that you can see if the
current tower supports GPRS with the "G" icon. When an Internet
connection is established on a Nokia phone(sorry not sure about others)
the "G" with change to a "G" with a circle around it. If your happen to
have your GPRS setting set to "use if nedded" then the phone will turn
on its GPRS components before making the connection. On the screen you
will first see the "G" appear indicating GPRS was turned on then a
second or two later it will change to a "G" with a circle around it
indicating your on the Internet. As far as what setting is better to
run, I keep mine to "always on". Technically it may put more of a strain
on the battery, but its very minimal. Also the ability on see the "G"
icon has absolutely no, I repeat no bearing on the plan you are using or
how the phone was provisioned. All the phone does is look at the data
channels the tower provides and looks to see if they support GPRS. Even
if you phone shows a "G" you still will not be able to access GPRS if
its not provisioned on your account.

I haven't even tried to get on the internet on either phone. I don't
really want the GPRS indicator on if I can get it turned off. I don't
know how I managed to turn it on. I just have the regular GAIT plan
with 400 minutes and that's all.

The GPRS indicator has three (3) states:
* blank: no GPRS service available
* grey: GPRS available but *not* provisioned for your SIM
* black: GPRS available and *is* provisioned for your SIM

Note that services are provisioned by SIM, not by phone, which just.has to be
configured properly -- see:

While there is extra battery drain when Bluetooth is turned on, there is no
extra battery drain from GPRS.

A black GPRS indicator on Sony Ericsson handsets means that (1) GPRS is
available and (2) GPRS is enabled for the SIM. In other words, GPRS *will*
work. GPRS won't work if and only if the GPRS indicator is grey or blank.

Well thanks for clearing that up John. The only question is why hasn't any
of the phones I've used so far shown the GPRS indicator. It appears that
the SIM in the wife's phone was activated differently. I think I'll call
customer service and see if I need to get them both activated the same way.
I just wonder why they were activated differently. I had never seen a GPRS
indicator and didn't know what it was until I went through the owners manual
of the phone to find out.
