Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what laptop would best suit my needs.

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5740G but it's about 7 years old now, and I know I definitely need an update.

My current laptop:

Pros: Nice big 15.6" screen. Was good for when I wanted to play some games on it, but no that's not something I'm interest in. Love that it runs Windows, as I can't stand Apple products. Good size keyboard, but definitely need back up lighting on keyboard. I liked that it had a cd burner

Cons: Too heavy, too bulky, fan is getting louder and louder. Overheats all the time, so I'm currently using a fan board that is plugged in through USB. Would prefer a chrome like colour. Low battery power.

I really love the looks of Mac's but I just hate their programming. I've done some searches on the internet of what are some good laptops/ultrabooks that compare to Macs, but I'm just so overwhelmed.

I'm 90% sure I want an Ultrabook, as I've just begun studying again, so I need something light and portable. I like a bigger screen than 13", and would prefer 15" but something in the middle is fine. I would prefer something that has a long powered battery, and light up keyboard. Needs to have a HDMI port. Weight preferably 4.5 pounds ( 2kgs). Would love high resolution like Mac's retina, but I can understand that's quite pricey.

I will only be using this for school, listening to music, emails, and personal social media. I will need my laptop in the future when I get into Social Media Marketing as well, so if needs to be speedy.

Price Range $300-$1000, Would really prefer $700 max.

Thanks everyone!!

Greetings, HollyMay:

First off, I'm a heavy Lenovo user so let me draw your attention to these Yogas:

As you can see, these are very stylish and light devices at around 3.5 lbs and within your stated price range. Lenovo claims 7 hours+ for battery life, but they don't have a back-lit keyboard (probably due to the 360-degree feature). Also, Lenovo's screens are not their strongest suit, and if this means a lot to you, you might want to watch this YouTube video by "Lisa from Mobile Tech Review":

The way I see it, it's a choice between the $699 and the $969 option. With the latter you get a faster CPU and more storage. If you plan on using it for several years, you could justify the extra cost as an investment in your future career.

But there are lots of other capable machines these days. Check out this web-page:

Best of luck with your studies,
