How come my laptop speakers only play sound when I plug in the headphones, and then it plays through both the laptop and the h

My sound was working perfectly fine the other day, and then all of a sudden it didn't work. But when I plug my headphones into the laptop it plays sound through the laptop speakers and the headphones.

Sounds like the contact pins on the headphone plug are not connecting properly. Could someone have stuck some kind of foreign object in the headphone plug?
