how come my yamaha rx-A830 will play only two front speakers

Can't het my yamaha receiver to play in surround, have front,center. And rear end but only front will play

is the content you are playing actually recorded in 5.1?

Have you gone through the receiver set up so it knows how your speakers are configured? If you didn't the receiver won't know how to direct the audio. To check if your source is in surround sound the display of the receiver should indicate what kind of input it is getting.
You can also try different surround modes.
