How do I connect to a network?

Have a ZTE phone w/very little instruction. Don't know how to access a network, get WiFi or pretty much anything else...I can make phone calls & that's about it!! I wanted it for when I'm away from home in case of an emergency, but now I'm interested in using it for more. The phone is free of charge (You have to use it at least once in 30 days to keep the service) so I'm guessing it's a pretty basic job. I have over 900 free minutes available! Can you guess, I've never had a cell phone before...I'm clueless!

What ZTE phone is it? You should be able to find the manual to it online.
