how do i get laptop to recognize sd card

i have a compac 6400 when i insert a sd card into the SD-MMC slot it doesn't recognize it

Have you tried inserting the SD card onto a different PC and were they able to read it? Here are some basic troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue.
- First is to uninstall/reinstall the card reader driver.
- Open Device Manager and uninstall the card reader driver.
- Depending on the Operating System installed in your laptop, download and install the driver from this link below.

- The card reader driver should be located under the Storage tab.
- Reboot your laptop once the latest driver has been installed.
- If the same problem will persist after the reboot do also run System Restore, bring it back to an earlier date or time when it was working just fine.
