How do I get my phone to read the sim?

I put a sim card in my verizon phone for straight talk byop. How do i get my phone to read the card? And display the sim number on phone?

It should automatically read the sim card when you put it in the phone, there must be some sort of hardware issue, what kind of phone is it?
