How do you organize your loose plugs, controllers, etc?

How do you organize all of your loose plugs, controllers, RF switches,
etc?? Do you wind them up with twist ties? Put them in plastic baggies?
And then, how do you store them? Lay them out on shelves? Throw them
into a big box? Or do you have some type of compartmental storage units
or drawers?

My joysticks (Atari, NES, Nes joypads, Master system joypads, etc.
etc..), I kind of just wrap the cords around them and put them in a big
box. My bigger, "stick" joysticks (NES advantage, and up..) I wrap the
cords around and put them on a shelf. These take up an unbelievable
amount of space if you don't stack them.

My plugs I have taken to labeling with white adhesive stickers. For
example, for the Genesis 1 and 2 plugs, I'll label the Genesis "Genesis
1, also Turbografx", since I know it will work on both, or "Genesis 1
also Sega CD". The Atari Jaguar plug I'll write "Also Master System" -
that way I won't forget which will work with what. I used to keep the
plug attatched to the system, but that's just not practical, not
anymore. I have a WHOLE SLEW of various plugs I found that will work on
my NES, about 7 or 8, and I just labeled them all "NES alternative".

Still don't know how I'm gonna organize all these plugs. Either I gotta
use my shelf space more efficiently, or get mor shelves.

All of unused cables are wound up and held by a twist ties. Some
controllers are hung on a spin rack (formerly Toys R Us display rack)
and the rests in bin. Most oif the stuff I leave on the racks are
infrequently used controllers like light guns or paddles as well as a
few spares in case the one currently plugged to the system goes south.

Those in bins are those that I have way too many of (no one needs 27
assorted RF switch boxes for example)

I generally keep all my peripherals in a Rubbermaid tote. Anything
of any real value gets wrapped in plastic before it enters the tote.
Tends to be a pain in the arse though when it comes time for you to
find something in particular, but otherwise convenient.

Right now, I'm making do with the space I have... but my long-term goal is
to make a display that sits on top of multiple legs of PVC piping. It'd be
designed so that each controller can stay on display, while the cord goes
into the piping and stays out of sight, but yet can't get tangled in other
cords. The only thing to consider is that I've got about 20 different
controllers for various systems... that's a lot of piping.

This is the best idea I've heard yet.

I seperate out into boxes, one box each for :

atari controllers
sega controllers
nintendo controllers
"other" controllers
atari power supplies
sega power supplies
"other" power supplies
nintendo power supplies
a box for official sega/nintendo r/f and a/v cables
a box for generic r/f, rca cables

cables are tied up with rubber bands (which tend to degrade after a year or
so, but I prefer them to ties which are a hassle to use, I find).

This is all in the spare room. In a cupboard next to the TV I have a box
containing two controllers for each system on the TV stand.
