I'm thinking about getting a new laptop for school, mainly for programming/CS stuff and gaming on the side. I am interested to know how much of a dropoff, if any, I will experience in general performance with regards to my old gaming rig. This Y580 is a great deal, for only $800 with my student discount.

My old gaming desktop:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512mb GDDR3
6GB DDR2-6400
640gb 7200rpm WD Black HDD
750-watt Corsair PSU
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium

Lenovo Y580:
Intel Core i5 2310m 2.5GHz
nVidia GeForce GTX 660m 2GB GDDR5
500GB 7200rpm HDD
6GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (my free student copy)

Will the GTX 660m possibly be an improvement over my old 8800GT 512mb? And how do the CPU's compare?

Your desktop's CPU is more powerful than that laptop, by about 25% give or take. On the flipside, that 660m will trounce your old 8800GT. You'd probably notice an increase in FPS in games, but a decrease in single-threaded performance. You could negate some of that by putting your OS and primary apps on a SSD, however.

Edit: I would go for it, if I were you, especially if the LCD in that laptop is 1080p. That's a pretty good deal for a pretty good laptop. You could upgrade the CPU later if you wanted, though laptop CPUs cost more than their desktop counterparts and laptops are a heck of a lot more time consuming to upgrade.
