After supply starts to catch up to more then .... barren, I would like to see stores take up a pre=order with a 20% down using the 5 check system. Before anyone goes, "scalpers are using bots" that 5 check system has greatly reduced scalpers and bots by a lot. Must have a unique Name, Ship /Address, payment, phone/custom ID, and human recognition or captcha. 90 days in between.
It may take a few weeks before you get a console, but you will get a console at MSRP.
A lot of retailers could care less about the shortage and are just happy to see throngs of traffic to their site each day, hoping to lead them towards other purchases.

I still cant believe I got my preorders from Amazon when they were first available for both PS5 ans Series X with no issues at all.
On nov 10 the Xbox arrived and two days later the PS5 was delivered.
