Solved! How much RAM.

Hi there.

I have a GTX 1050 4GB Y520 laptop with 4GB RAM (2 slots in total, 1 slot empty). I would like to add on the empty slot:

1. 1x 4GB stick so in total I will have 8GB ram running in dual-channel or
2. 1x 8GB stick so in total I will have 12GB ram.

Which of the above do you guys think it's better? I know the best would be 16GB total, but that is out of my budget. If I choose the 2nd option will I have 4-4GB running in dual-channel mode and the remaining 4GB in single-channel? Or I will have the 4GB stick running in single-channel and the other 12GB stick in single-channel?

Do not mix and match rams regardless of what platform you're on. I'd suggest you go for a 2x8GB DDR4-2400MHz ram kit. Just to be double sure, can you pass on the SKU to your laptop?

It is an Y520-15IKBN.
If I buy the exact same model RAM as the 4GB already in the system, but it is an 8GB stick will I have problems of compatibility?

Memory is guaranteed in the form sold. Other combinations you may decide to make have no guarantee to be compatible together. This includes your existing memory as well as exact match, same thing, identical.
