Hello,
I have 4 gigs of installed ram that came shipped with my laptop, but it says I only have 1.63 gigs available, I am running a64 bit version of windows 7 on an acer aspire 5742g-7200.

Solution
Understood. Go to Acer and make sure you have the latest BIOS for your system installed. Also, I assume you have 2 SO-DIMMs installed. Try removing one of them (powered down system, of course) and see what gets reported.
What is telling you that only 1.63 is available? What does your BIOS indicate and how much does Windows report (Control Panel/System)?

This is my assumption as well. Standing by for clarification.

The Bios and windows system info are showing that only 1.63 gigs are available, but it says there is 4gb physical ram installed and i know that window takes up some ram but to take up over 2gbs of Ram seems high. I also have a nvdia gefrce 420 1gb installed on the system.
Thanks for any help -tset

You should run memtest as well to check your memory's defect status.

The BIOS says that there is 4096 + the 1024 from the video card available. Windows is now saying i have 2.56 gigs of ram available out of a possible 3.87. I ran memtest for about an hour and no errors came up in that time.

If memtest isn't reporting anything, I agree with colgeek that it may be an issue with the BIOS. Update that everything else having to do with the motherboard, i.e. chipset and such and see if that helps.
