Once you plug in the HDMI to the laptop and to the TV you'll need to go into (depending on the OS) "Display Settings". On Windows you can do this by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Display Settings". Once there, you'll click on the 2nd screen and find the option to either "mirror", "extend", or "show only on screen 2". That should be pretty close to how it works as it's all off the top of my head. If you need further help, let me know which OS you're using.
