How to Disable Online Tracking

It’s a sad fact of the modern internet that you are more or less tracked wherever you go. Sites like Google and Facebook do this under the guise of offering “targeted advertisements,” instead of throwing ads at you for items that you would never be interested in. However, most users are rightfully bothered by having their movements tracked for any reason, be it harmless advertisements or harmful spying.

Since Google is arguably the biggest offender when it comes to tracking users online, we have put together this guide to help you disable online tracking through Google. Use the steps below to do this.

Step 1
On your default internet browser, type the URL www.google.com/settings/ads into the navigation bar. Hit the enter key to go to the website. You should be greeted by a page with two separate columns. The first is for “Ads on Google” and the second is for “Google ads across the web.”

Step 2
Scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see a row that reads “Opt-out settings.”

Step 3
In both the “Ads on Google” column and the “across the web” column, click the “Opt-out” button to stop Google from presenting you with “interest-based ads.” Google will no longer use your information for advertising purposes, either within its own sites and apps or at any other spot on the web.

Step 4
The above steps will eliminate Google’s targeted advertising, but they won’t completely stop Google from tracking you. To shut down Google’s tracking cookie, type www.google.com/settings/ads/plugin into your navigation bar. You will be able to download a plugin that shuts down ad tracking on your browser.
