How to get my sound working when using lg dvd player and sylvania older style tv

Without model number we can't know what connections you have available.
Assuming the the DVD has HDMI only and the TV doesn't have HDMI you will need to convert HDMI to whatever kind of input the TV has. That will require an active converter rather than a passive cable.
