How to record/edit in HQ?

Hello,

I recently started recording videos of gameplay from my PC. I'm using fraps, recording at 30 fps. When I view the recording, it looks awesome- high detail, my resolution etc. But when I cut out a part of a video that I want to upload, it looks like I've recorded it with a toaster or something. I tried movie maker and formatfactory to cut out the video. What do I do to make the cut-out part look great as in the original recording?

Are you changing the resolution of format at the same time as cutting the piece you want to keep? Any changes like that could be lowering the quality of the recording drastically.

I set it to the highest possible, it says High detail, large size. I tried changing the resolution from "default" to 1024x768 as that is the highest possible I have listed. It looks a lot better in full screen now, thanks.

Btw, my monitor resolution is 1280x1024, do I need to have a HD monitor in order to record in HD?
