How to Schedule a Mac's Startup and Shutdown Times

Are you someone who consistently forgets to power down your computer before bed each night? Most experts recommend turning off your computer on a regular basis—especially if it is a laptop—to help save battery and maintain high performance. Luckily, on a Mac, you can put your computer on a schedule, so it starts up and powers down on its own! Use the steps below to implement these settings.

Step 1
On your Mac, open up System Preferences and select “Energy Saver” from under the hardware section. You’ll see several preference settings, including sliders that allow you to change how long it takes for your computer to go to sleep.

Step 2
At the bottom right-hand corner of the Energy Saver window, you’ll see a button that says “Schedule…” Click this button to open up a tab where you can change your computer’s automatic start-up and shut down times.

Step 3
In the new tab, check the boxes next to both items. The first is “Start up or wake.” The second, meanwhile, can be “Sleep,” “Restart,” or “Shut Down.” In essence, though, these functions allow you to schedule the beginnings and endings of your computer’s day.

Step 4
After checking the aforementioned boxes, decide whether you want your computer to Sleep, Restart or Shut Down at the end of the day and choose that option. You can also select the days on which you want this schedule observed (you can choose individual days, every day, weekends, or weekdays). Finally, pick the times at which you want your computer to start up and shut down. Once you’ve made your choices, click “OK” to approve them.

Recap
Your Mac is now on a schedule where it will wake up and shut down at the same time each day! Note, however, that your computer will have to be connected to a power source to keep to this schedule.
