HP Laptop turns on but screen stays black

If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it as this issue is seriously frustrating me. My father owns an HP laptop. A few years ago his screen went out and he had whatever the issue was replaced, then it happened again, so he replaced it again. Now it seems like he has a virus that causes his screen to not come up when he turns it on, no back light, no nothing. But the computer still runs. If he hooks it up to an external monitor it works. I've ran some scans on it before and it's made it come up but idk. He'll be doing something and then the computer will freeze completely and he'll have to shut it off. But then when he turns it back on the screen is black. Everything works, except the screen. It's as if the computer isn't even on. Can anyone help me?

Probably, the problem is with graphic drivers. Or some cables are damaged. Or at least a stupid variant: is it ok with the monitor's brightness?

It seems just fine with the brightness. Everything seems normal. His computer will run just fine, and then it will freeze completely, mouse and all, and the only way for him to get anywhere with it is to shut it off and turn it back on. But when he turns it back on the screen doesn't come back on. It happens every time the computer does shut down updates too. That's why he thinks it's a virus. It's driving me insane.

sounds like onboard video is crapping out or the screen itself.
