HP Monitor Sleeping

I just purchased a Dell computer and have a HP monitor and cannot get it to hook up...it keeps telling me the monitor is sleeping?

What connection type are you using? What are the models of the devices? Does the monitor show up in the Display Manager screen as a second monitor aside from the laptop display?
