HP Pavilion new hard drive won't run correctly.

So a couple of years ago, I bought a HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1 for playing a few small games while on the go. Long story short, I downloaded Windows 10 when it came out, and it crashed my computer. As it turned out, Windows 10 fried my hard drive. So i ordered the same hard drive that was originally in my laptop, but the laptop wouldn't run any games i had, even small ones from the Xbox game store. It ran all games at about 0.5 to 1 frame per second. So my question is, would it be the wrong hard drive that i'm using that would be causing the problems? Or would it be that I need to "tune" the hard drive that i have? Thanks for your time.
