I am trying to connect my surround sound system to my direct tv receiver so that I can have surround sound while watching tv.

Trying to connect surround sound system to direct tv receiver. I can only have surround sound if I play a dvd or cd, not when I'm watching tv. I would just like to know what cables I need to make this happen or if it's even possible.

It depends on the make and model of the surround system and TV. Generally though a lot of the cheap surround systems are made just for the DVD system and not hooking up other things to get full surround.

the tv is RCA and the surround sound system is Samsung

We need exact model numbers. Brands don't matter as they can vary in what they offer from one model to the next greatly.

The model number for the TV is LED50B45RQ, the model number for the Surround sound system is HT-C5500 it also has a model code if that makes a difference and that is HT-C5500/XAA. I also got the model number for the Direct TV receiver in case you needed that as well. It is H44-100
