I am trying to transfer photos from my samsung s4 to my lenovo laptop with windows 8. I have been at this for over 2 hours and it just can't be this difficult.

Hi,

First make sure that the phone is connected properly via USB. Open Computer folder and you should see there another driver letter which is for your phone or it could also be labeled as Samsung S4. Browse thru that driver and look for "DCIM" where all your photo's are located. You can just drag and drop photos from the DCIM folder to your PC (just create a photo folder).
