I don’t know what to buy

I know nothing about laptops and I’m saving up for one. I know MacBook pros are really good laptops but they’re so expensive and I’m probably going to finance it through Best Buy, but I’m still weighing my options. What would you guys recommend for video editing?

Depends on your budget. At a minimum, I recommend the following $600 Acer laptop with the quad core i5-8250u CPU. Having 4 cores is better than having 2 cores when it comes to video editing.

The i5-8250 can max out to 3.4GHz, but that is assuming only one core is being used. Typically when 2 cores are used the clockspeed will drop by 200MHz. If more than 2 cores are used then the clockspeed will likely drop by 400MHz. That is done to prevent the CPU from overheating. However, the base clock speed is 1.6GHz so if the CPU is getting too warm, then Turbo Boost will be disabled and the max clock speed...

If you are on budget, get desktop. Much cheaper and more powerful. It can be upgrade in the future.

A laptop with an i5-7300HQ would be a better option. It is a quad core CPU with a max clockspeed of 3.5GHz; presumably it will drop to 3.1GHz if all core are being used. However, it's base clockspeed is 2.5GHz so if the CPU starts to overheat, then Turbo Boost will be disabled and the max clockspeed will be 2.5GHz.

Lastly a laptop with a quad core i7-7700HQ would be your best option if you can afford it. It's max Turbo Boost / base clocksped is 3.8GHz / 2.8GHz. However, it has Hyper Threading so instead of only being able to process 4 threads of instructions like the i5-8250u and the i5-7300HQ it can process up to 8 threads of instructions.

Note: Programs needs to be designed to make use of multiple cores and Hyper Threading (HT). If they are not designed to do so then having so many core and HT is of no use. Fortunately, modern video codecs used to encode / decode videos can make use of multiple cores and use HT. That is why an i7-7700HQ is the best choice for encoding videos.
