Well first off, if you are referring to a phone's specs saying it comes with 8GB, that is total. That doesn't mean that much free usable space. The OS takes up some of it as do the preinstalled apps. So you only have access to what was left after that.

You should be able to go into the phones "Settings" and then tap "Storage". It should show you how much internal space you have free.
