I use hdmi to cable box from tv, I have dvd home theatre sound, & I use optical from cable box to dvd for tv sound, if I used a hmdi cable from tv to DVD will I still get sound on tv with out using the optical cable
 
From the sounds of your Post the DVD player is the surround sound receiver.

If DVD/Receiver has multiple HDMI inputs:
Connect all devices to DVD/Receiver and then DVD/Receivers HDMI OUT to TV

If only one HDMI port (output) on DVD/Receiver:
Connect all source devices to TV via HDMI.
Connect TV to DVD/Receiver with optical. This will allow all other audio sources to go back to the surround receiver.
