I have a display problem that progressively became worse.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L665D-S5159.

Currently, I can only faintly see anything on the display.

A couple weeks prior to this problem, the display would go out for a few seconds at a time, then come back to normal. It seemed to happen randomly, and it would seem to correct itself on its own.

Now this problem has become permanent. I can barely make out anything on the screen, and only when in the right lighting.

I need help diagnosing the problem as well as a solution.

That's a classic description of a backlight inverter failure. Not something an amateur can easily replace (without breaking something else). I recommend that you get it to a Toshiba certified service center for repair.
