does the intel graphics completely get involved before nvidia or it is shared by both equally for the basic work and displaying 1080p or 720p video on laptop?
Depends on the laptop, if you see "Switchable graphics" it will use the integrated GPU in the processor for most tasks and switch to the stronger card when it detects an app that would need it.
Seeing and this is an 820M which isnt that strong to begin with, it may not use the cpu's built in gpu at all.

Most Laptops that have dedicated graphics will first use the integrated. It saves power and reduces heat. If you have NVIDIA you should be able to go into your settings (right click on desktop and click on nvidia control panel) and manually adjust it to always use one or the other. If not then the option should be in the Geforce experience app.
